In 2002, Optimus was contracted by Orcutt/Winslow to provide civil engineering services for a new high school campus that would replace the existing high school. Tombstone which is located ~80 miles southeast of Tucson had extensive topography relief. Among the challenges, the school campus sat at ~4,000 feet above sea level on a ridge that had to be flattened out to accommodate the buildings. Cut and fill slopes ranged from 10-50 feet in height. Since Tombstone did not have enough supply in its water system, a storage tank was constructed on the face of the mountain for the school’s potable water and fire flow needs. To date, Tombstone High School was one of the most challenging projects that Optimus has encountered for a school campus.
